Interactive coding and transmission of high-resolution images. Applications in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, and Telemedicine (INCO)

The Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DEIC) and the Department of Geography of the Universitat Aut�noma of Barcelona propose the "Interactive coding and transmission of high-resolution images" project, INCO. This is a coordinated project of orientated or applied research, in which researchers from the Centre of Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) and the Parc Taul� Health Corporation (CSPT) will participate.

The main goal is the research and development of a platform of interactive compression and transmission of high-resolution and/or enormous volumes (terapixels) images with their standardized metadata.

The technological transfer resulting from the project will consist in integrating the developed platform into two applications:

  • A cartographic browser and GIS called MiraMon, developed by CREAF.
  • A viewer of digital medical images, called Raim, developed by the Unit of Advanced Diagnosis (UDIAT) of CSPT.

The project will also research in quantitative analysis of the implications of this new paradigm of compression and transmission of data for image analysis, particularly multitemporal images.

The motivation of the project is based on the new needs of the users of geographic information systems and medical diagnosis systems, who need to be able to access large volumes of information, both high-resolution images and their associated metadata, in an agile, interactive and efficient way. In the case of the images, and due to their increasing size, interactive transmission must allow scalability for resolution, for space location, and for quality; and interactive compression must address progressive, interframe and selective compression. The characteristics planned for the platform are:

  • decrease in the bandwidth necessary for the transmission
  • availability of multiple formats of image compression
  • independence from the operating system
  • the possibility of being adapted to mobile devices (PDA, telephones)
  • intelligent configuration depending on the user profile

The project is presented to the P. N. en Tecnolog�as de Servicios para la Sociedad de la Informaci�n (TSI) (National Program in Technologies of Information Society Services ), since the proposal clearly adapts to the goal "1. Servicios para la sociedad de la Informaci�n. Tecnolog�as software/hardware" (Services for the information society. Software/hardware technologies).
